Seeing stars
By MUMTAJ BEGUM

The 2006 Global Indian Film Awards (Gifa 2006) wrapped up on early Sunday morning with the awards night signalling the departure of the Bollywood stars who attended the three-day event held in Kuala Lumpur. Most of them booked flights as early as 6.30am to get back to their busy lives in India.

Stars like Abishek Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra, Shah Rukh Khan, Sunil Shetty, Arjun Rampal, John Abraham, Bipasha Basu, Hritik Roshan, Rakesh Roshan, Jeetandra, Salman Khan, Amisha Patel, Katrina Kaif and Aftab Shivdasani were seen at the various functions held in conjunction with Gifa 2006.

Among the events that the stars took part were the world premiere of Ravi Chopra’s Baabul held at TGV KLCC on Dec 7, a soccer match between the Bollywood stars and Malaysian VIPs (it ended with a draw) and a fashion show-cum-auction (Salman Khan’s jacket was sold at RM78,000) on Dec 8 and a charity event hosted by Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, wife of Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, acting president of Bakti (Association of Wives of Ministers and Deputy Ministers) and the patron of Gifa 2006 – for the underprivileged children on Dec 9.

The climax of Gifa was the awards night which saw Bipasha Basu and Hritik Roshan walking away as best actress and best actor, respectively.

Here’s a rundown of who did what ...

Shah Rukh Khan
1. Shah Rukh Khan made the children from Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation, Rumah Kanak-kanak Tengku Budriah, Persatuan Sri Ramakrishna Sarada Malaysia, Rumah Amal Cahaya Tengku Ampuan Rahimah, Pure Life Society, Rumah Sayangku Kuala Lumpur, Gurpuri Foundation and Wisma Harapan very happy when he and his Bollywood peers had a meet-and-greet session with them. Bakti acting president – Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor – was also present along with Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil.

Abishek Bachchan.
2. Guess all the girls knew the answer to Abishek Bachchan’s far-out question – what is the capital of Iceland? Abishek – Amitabh Bachchan’s son – was the first performer at the awards night and he left right after that to catch a flight back home. Hence he was missing when he was announced the best actor in a supporting role for Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. Actor John Abraham collected the award on his behalf and promptly said: “I wish I was Abishek Bachchan because everybody loves him.”

Priyanka Chopra.
3. Where is the coconut tree, please? Priyanka Chopra who was in Malaysia for the filming of Don not too long ago returned to perform a Bollywood number (here with a male dancer) at Gifa 2006. She was named the most searched Bollywood actress on the Net.

Salman Khan.
4. So this is how Salman Khan keeps fit to escape the law. He and fellow actors, including Arjun Rampal and Arbaz Khan, participated in a soccer match between Bollywood stars and some Malaysian ministers. Salman and Arjun scored one goal each.

Bipasha Basu.
5. Who wouldn’t want Bipasha Basu as their substitute teacher? Nobody, that’s who, because this actress is beautiful and smart! Bipasha accompanied her beau, John Abraham, for the premiere of Baabul at KLCC, starring John Abraham alongside Rani Mukherjee, Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini.
