Sharjah - Organisers apologise for Salman Khan chaos
Monday, 5th February, 2007

The organisers of a shop opening by Bollywood Superstar Salman Khan that decended into chaos have apologised for the mass disturbance.
Many present at Saffer Mall on Friday night accused security guards of using excessive force by wielding their belts and metal poles to beat over-excited fans.
Mahesh Kalwani, COO of Al Safeer Group, said yesterday: “Chaos broke out owing to Khan’s visit as fans flocked to see him. As a result a total rush took place and people started moving in a disorganised manner.
“Owing to this, Safeer Mall authorities, with strict instructions from Sharjah Police, had to take control of the situation before several innocents were crushed in the stampede stirred by a few handful of miscreants.”
He added: “There was a need to act speedily while being careful about physically hurting anyone.”
Khan reached the mall at around 8pm only to be quickly escorted out of the premises due to the huge throng of his adoring fans.
Thousands tried to force themselves into the Red Tape shoe shop prompting the security personnel - belonging to a private company - to force them back.
“We humbly apologise for the discomfort caused as it was not intentional but in the best interest of the people gathered in the mall,” added Kalwani.
