The recently held Provogue GIFA Awards in Malaysia could not have been so successful without the Khans support. Namely Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan. They were seen in more limelight and action at this awards night as compared to any stars and that only helped the Malaysian fans to get their money worth.
Over 4000 ecstatic fans thronged the Putra Stadium to witness the five-hour award function, attended by Malaysia's Queen, Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi and Deputy Premier Najib Tun Razak and the cream of Indian cinema. Shatrughna Sinha and wife Ponam Sinha were seated along with the Royals of Malaysia in the front row.
Earlier at the red carpet fans went wild over Salman but were upset that Shah Rukh made a backdoor entry and ignored them. Upen Patel walked in with girl friend Shamita while Hrithik came with his family. John and Bipasha made a classy entry and made sure their fans got the picture or the handshake. Many fans waited for Kajol and Rani, but were disappointed as they did not make it to Malaysia.
Shah Rukh Khan made his grand entry sporting the Don look and acknowledged and expressed his gratitude on behalf of GIFA to the patron, dignitaries present and the people of Malaysia but also apologized for not being able to perform due to a leg injury due to hamstring. To compensate for this, Shah Rukh also compeered a part of the event along with Minissha Lamba, Arbaaz Khan, Rohit Roy, Arjun Rampal and Riya Sen.
Among the performers were Abhishek Bachchan, who got the most responses from the audience. Salman gave a never before live act followed by Katrina Kaif, Priyanka Chopra and Amisha Patel.
Hrithik Roshan walked off with the Best Actor award for his superhero role in Krissh and dusky beauty Bipasha Basu won the Best Actress award for her role in Corporate, beating big names like Kajol, Kareena Kapoor and Rani Mukherjee.
Director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's Rang De Basanti, India's official entry for the Oscars in the Best Foreign Film category, had in its kitty awards in the categories of Best Director, Best Supporting Actress (Soha Ali Khan), Best Music (A. R. Rahman), Best Lyrics (Prasoon Joshi), Best Screenplay (Abhijat Joshi & Rajkumar Hirani), Best Editing (P. S. Bharti) Best Back ground Score (A R Rahman) and Best Art Director (Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra).
Abhishek Bachchan won in the Best Supporting Actor category for his role in Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, beating his own father superstar Amitabh Bachchan. Hrithik Roshan dedicated the award to his father Rakesh Roshan and described him as a "true superhero". A separate award was given to Rakesh Roshan for his outstanding contribution to Indian cinema over the past 35 years.
