Rishi Kapoor rediscovering love
Friday, 07 July 2006
"After so many years Rishi remains unchanged. "
By Subhash K. Jha
Mumbai, July 7 - Yesteryear chocolate hero Rishi Kapoor has never been more content. His children - Ridhima and Ranbir - have settled down in life, he is still getting good offers and has lots of free time to spend with wife Neetu.
'My daughter is married. My son is starting his own career as an actor. I am relaxed and chilled. My wife Neetu and I have more time to spend together. It's been years since we have had time for each other,' Rishi told IANS.
There's also the excitement of Ranbir being launched by Sanjay Leela Bhansali in 'Saawariya'.
'I am anxiously looking forward to Ranbir's first film. He is in very competent hands. We are waiting for the moment when the world will see him and respond to whatever talent he has. Ranbir has a long battle ahead.
'I am a fighter myself. I have been a fighter in the film industry for 34 years. Today I still get work. I am part of another huge success called 'Fanaa'.'
'Fanaa', starring Aamir Khan and Kajol, is Rishi's second success with Kunal Kohli after 'Hum Tum'. 'If I have to believe what the trade is saying, then 'Fanaa' is one of the biggest things to have happened to the film industry. Which is what I'd like to see more often in our cinema.'
According to this acute trade analyst, 'Fanaa' worked because it's an original script.
'Hats off to writer Shibani Bhatija. Her father Raj Bhatija is a producer and a very old friend of mine. I worked with him in an unreleased film called 'Maang Sajaa Do Meri' where I got to work with Sanjeev Kumar for the first and last time.'
Rishi says he is going to be away from both - acting and filmmaking - until he gets a vehicle worth his while.
'There's an acute shortage of thinkers and writers in this country. Every filmmaker is assembling big stars and weaving stories around them. Barring Sanjay Bhansali's 'Black' and Rakeysh (Omprakash) Mehra's 'Rang De Basanti', most of our recent films are a hotchpotch.'
He enjoyed working with Aamir in 'Fanaa'. 'I told Aamir when we were shooting in Poland for 'Fanaa' that I had some problems with the second-half of 'Basanti'. He is a good listener and narrator. He narrated a fabulous story idea to me for a film he is producing. I have convinced him to direct it. He can be a very good director.'
After so many years Rishi remains unchanged.
'Yes, after so many years there is still a 'Fanaa'. So many people thought the film was slow, boring and implausible. How do we explain its stupendous success? Mera kya? It's a small role. My role has an emotional impact. I am just happy to be part of such a successful endeavour.'

Monty Sharma: "Music of Saawariya is going to be a rocking madness"
Faridoon Shahryar, IndiaGlitz [Saturday, July 01, 2006]
“Saawariya music is going to be a rocking madness; it won't disappoint people who are expecting the world from the next Sanjay Leela Bhansali film after a songless Black,” says Monty Sharma, the music composer who is making his debut with Bhansali’s much anticipated Saawariya that is also serving as the launch-pad of star-kids Ranbeer and Sonam Kapoor.
As a Keyboardist Monty played for many music directors like Sajid-Wajid, Nikhil-Vinay, Milind Sagar, Sanjeev-Darshan etc. but he gained recognition when he was asked by Ismail Darbar to do the music arrangements for Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (title track) and Nimbuda. Bhansali saw the spark in him and asked him to do the background score for his Shahrukh-Aishwarya starrer Devdas and also the Devdas theme that was featured on the audio cd of the music soundtrack. After parting ways with Ismail, SLB assigned Monty the Herculean task of designing the background score for Black.
“When Sanjay ji narrated Black, he wanted music for a deaf, dumb and blind character. He said that it should touch a person in the simplest way. I composed a small theme and he simply loved it. The visuals of the film were very powerful. And when there is Sanjay ji as the director, Amit ji and Rani as artistes, I had to push the limits to get the best out of myself,” says Monty. How did it feel when Mr Bachchan praised your effort during his speech at the Filmfare Awards? “That was the greatest honour. To be praised by Amit ji was a great morale booster.”
Monty won the best background score award at Screen, Filmfare and Zee. From here on he wishes to do some really good stuff as music is passion for him. But as he is climbing the stairs of success, he also wants to acknowledge the role played by his grandfather Pandit Ram Prasad Sharma, who according to him is responsible for 99% of the music in Bollywood. “He started playing Trumpet in the 1930s and 1940s. It was an era when even Naushad sahib was not on the scene yet. He taught many of the music directors like Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Uttam Singh, Anu Malik etc. Due to his experience, his observation was invaluable. I learnt piano from him. I never use any samplers or artificial forms of music making that most of the people are doing these days. He taught me the importance of originality. And that’s my biggest plus point.”
So, apart from Saawariya, any other film offers? “Yes, there are quite a few. But I would like to do full justice to Saawariya first of all and then think about something else.” Being the blue eyed man of Sanjay Leela Bhansali, you must be inviting envy quite-a- plenty. “I don't think about all that. But I guess, when you are moving up in life, there are bound to be some tongues wagging and if there are no attempts to pull you down, then you are going nowhere.” Finally, could you tell us something about the sound of Saawariya. “My lips are sealed. Can’t talk anything about it right now. But as I had said earlier, it will be rocking.”

Bhansali's musical 'Saawariya'
By Faridoon Shahryar, IndiaGlitz [Monday, June 19, 2006]
Genius filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali is immersed in shooting his next musical ‘Saawariya’ starring debutantes Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor. A week into the actual shooting proceedings and Bhansali is enjoying the experience to the hilt. Having worked with stalwarts like Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan, Ajay Devgan, Rani Mukherjee and Aishwarya Rai, this is the first time ‘Devdas’ director is working with absolute newcomers. In his own opinion, the two star children Ranbir and Sonam are like clay in his hands that are willing to be moulded in whatever way.
It was because of his busy shooting schedule that SLB had to miss out on the IIFA Awards where his landmark film ‘Black’ won all possible awards. Some are conjecturing that he missed the award show to miss the scrutiny on his court case filed by an antique collector with regards to the fire that destroyed precious antiques on the ‘Black’ sets. Whatever may be the case, Bhansali’s every move is eliciting extra curiosity. Like the song-less ‘Black’ is followed by a musical ‘Saawariya’ where Monty Sharma is making his debut as a music director. Sharma has earlier arranged songs on ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’ and ‘Devdas’ while also doing the background score for ‘Black’. The film industry is eagerly looking forward to this new discovery of SLB as he was the one who made Ismail Darbar, a name to be reckoned with.

A KAPOOR COMBINE
Rishi Kapoor’s son Ranbir and Anil Kapoor’s daughter Sonam are making their debut in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saaw-ariya (Beloved).
Yes, we know that you have read all about it. But what you probably don’t know is that the love story currently on the floors is a musical based on Fyodor Dostoevsky’s White Nights. A tender and romantic story, it is about the chance encounter of two people Raj and Sakina and their obsession with each other over four successive nights.
Salman Khan and Rani Mukerji too are part of this eagerly awaited film from Bhansali written by Prakash Kapadia.

Sanjay Bhansali faces arrest
Faridoon Shahryar, IndiaGlitz [Saturday, June 10, 2006]
Ace director Sanjay Leela Bhansali is in for some troubled times. Farida Hoosenally, an antique shop owner in South Mumbai had rented some expensive antique items to Bhansali during the shooting of his acclaimed masterpiece ‘Black’. The same antique pieces were destroyed in the fire that had gutted the sets of the film. When Bhansali refused to compensate the losses that ran into crores, she had to run helter-skelter before High Court intervened and directed the police to file an FIR in the case.
Farida arrived in Mumbai from London on Friday and will be filing an FIR at the Aarey Police Station today. Since this is a non-bailable offence, it could mean the arrest of six people, including Bhansali, the prime accused. Farida says she was charmed by Sanjay’s smooth ways and due to which she never took any guarantee from him and gave away the furniture. But when the damage was done, Bhansali even stopped taking her calls. It is strange but SLB has a history of fire destroying his sets. The story started with a palatial set catching fire leading to the loss of crores in ‘Devdas’. ‘Black’ met with a similar mishap.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali is unavailable but his office says that let the law take its own course. Stay tuned to IndiaGlitz for updates to the antics unspoiled by this story.

Bhansali to bring back Amitabh-Rekha magic even before Rohan Sippy?
by Debasis Jana
Few days back, we had reported in this space that director Rohan Sippy of 'Bluffmaster' fame has signed up Rekha and Amitabh Bachchan for 'Silsila' sequel. And if the thing works out finally, then obviously Rohan Sippy will get the credit for bringing back the ever-sizzling pair after so many years. However the sequel will be made in English. And there's the scope for ace director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who is making every efforts to cast Amitabh and Rekha together in his forthcoming Hindi movie 'Saanwaria', to take the cake away.

My grandfather is responsible for 99% of the music in Bollywood” - Monty Sharma

Lyricist Sameer bags Sanjay Bhansali's Saawariya
Anything that Sanjay Leela Bhansali does makes news. The talented film maker is busy with his newest project, Saawariya. This film also happens to be the launch pad of Rishi Kapoor’s son, Ranbir and Anil Kapoor’s daughter, Sonam. The lyrics for the music of this film will be written by Sameer. He was actually in Hyderabad when Bhansali’s assistant got in touch with him. Apparently, the director was adamant on signing only Sameer. Earlier, the duo have worked together on the Ras Leela song in Devdas.
Sameer is really looking forward to this association. He never thought that Bhansali would approach him for an entire film. Around five songs have already been recorded. The lyricist believes that this movie will be a major stepping stone in his career. His other forthcoming projects include Shaadi Se Pehle, Baabul, Yun Hota To Kya Hota and 36 China Town.

Bhansali chooses RK Studios this time for first schedule of Saawariya
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s forthcoming film Saawariya is making news from it initial stages. Whether its star cast or the sets, the film is always been into news. Reportedly the first schedule for the film was to be shot at RK studio; Chembur from March 22 and even the stage no 1 was booked for three months. But it seems that now the shoot has been postponed to April 10.
Starring Rishi Kapoor's son Ranbir and Anil Kapoor's daughter Sonam, this movie will be Bhansali’s first movie to be shot at RK Studio. All his movies from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam to Devdas and Black have been shot at Film City and Filmistan.
The buzz is that Ranbir would be more comfortable facing the camera at his home studios built by his grandfather Raj Kapoor. But another story goes that Bhansali chose RK Studios because last time when he was shooting at Film City for Black, a massive fire broke out which led to loss of around Rs 2.5 crores.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali on Saawariya
By Subhash K. Jha, March 27, 2006 - 00:55 IST
After making films like "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam", "Devdas" and "Black" with established stars, Sanjay Leela Bhansali now teams up with two newcomers to 'rediscover' his own innocence in "Saawariya".
The love story is the debut vehicle of two star kids - Rishi Kapoor's son Ranbir and Anil Kapoor's daughter Sonam.
"After 'Black', where I worked with established stars, I reached a point where I needed to go beyond the stars, to rediscover my own innocence with the help of new talent. 'Saawariya' is about innocent love," Bhansali told IANS in an interview.
Talking about his new project, Bhansali said he couldn't afford to falter in "Saawariya".
"I can't go wrong in 'Saawariya'. It involves the career of two new talents. I feel Ranbir and Sonam can bring a new style of acting. Of course, they do have their parents' qualities."
Bhansali feels being star children is advantageous because it gives them access to important filmmakers.
Excerpts of the interview:
The casting of your new film has been under serious speculation for months now. Care to finally tell us about it?
Media persons wrote about the cast, not waiting for me to announce it. It had to be Ranbir and Sonam for "Saawariya". When I worked with Amitji (Amitabh Bachchan) in "Black", I was fulfilling a dream. No director of our times will feel complete without working with him. Having experienced that high, I needed the challenge of moulding talent, shaping new actors into my own vision. Ranbir and Sonam have given me that liberty.
This is the first time you are working with absolutely new talent.
It is important to move away from expectations - your own and others. "Black" broke many rules. After "Devdas" people said it was hara-kiri for me to make a dark film. But it was a spontaneous decision. "Saawariya" is again straight from the heart. And Sonam and Ranbir emerged from a completely natural instinct to cast the right faces for the two leads.
How did you actually zero in on Ranbir and Sonam?
The kids came to assist me. Ranbir joined me two years ago on "Black" when he just returned from abroad. A little later Anil Kapoor called to say his daughter is back in India and wants to work only with me. The first thing I noticed about them was that they were complete star material. I told them they were the kind of faces I'd like to put before the camera. At that time Ranbir and Sonam said they weren't sure. Later they confessed they had come with the primary intention of being noticed and cast by me. It's a confession that melted my heart.
What do you think of their potential as actors?
I wouldn't have cast them for merely being star children. Both have that special aura about them. And they have been preparing for the camera before coming to me. In the past eight months, I have been training them more intensively and fine-tuning what they don't know. I am enjoying this process of moulding new clay. They're both tremendous talents. Ranbir's talent comes from four generations of the Kapoors. Sonam has inherited her dedication from her father. And both have star quality. They are absolutely uncorrupted and mouldable.
Do you think being star-children is an advantage?
It does give them access to important filmmakers. And secretly they nurture the dream of following in their parents' footsteps. So they start following their dreams from childhood. Ranbir and Sonam have never been exposed to the undesirable side of film world. Like most star-kids, they are very well brought up children. They have had the best of education, upbringing... Now they'll face the serious disadvantage of being compared with their parents who were superstars in their own right.
After working with huge stars how does it feel to work with newcomers?
I feel I have gone back to my formative years as a filmmaker. It's like watching lives being shaped. Full credit goes to Ranbir and Sonam's parents for completely entrusting me with their children's talents. I find the kids extremely clued in. They sat with me while I wrote the script. They know what to do and how to do it. It's great fun working with Ranbir and Sonam.
And they have just one film to focus on...
Why should that be such a big virtue over here? Abroad every star works on one project at a time. I hope these kids continue to work on one film at a time. As I watch them evolve as actors, I am so proud and happy with the journey they have made in eight months. They are so focussed that sometimes I get rattled. For them, "Saawariya" is everything.
For you also!
For a filmmaker every film is important. I can't go wrong in "Saawariya". Somewhere Indian popular cinema needs more talent at the top. These two fit the bill. I feel Ranbir and Sonam would take audiences back to the innocence that has been missing in our films for some time. The audiences have watched fantastic performance by Rishi-Neetu (Singh) and Anil. They want to know what their children are worth. So far I have fulfilled my own dreams through my films. Now it's my turn to fulfil the dreams of these two kids and their family. Ranbir and Sonam understand their responsibilities towards themselves, their parents and my film. And yet they aren't weighed down by these responsibilities. We have great fun working together. That sense of enjoyment is bound to show up on screen.
Is innocence a possibility among today's youngsters?
Why not? It has to do with the way you look at life. Ranbir and Sonam are completely uncorrupted. Innocence is a state of mind. Even today at 76, Lata Mangeshkar sounds pristine. If you're born with that quality, you will always be in touch with god. From their conversations and their approach to their characters, I know Ranbir and Sonam are innocent. They motivate me to find the innocent side of my personality in "Saawariya", just like "Black" helped me get in touch with my dark side. I'm sure I've made the right decision by casting these two. They've certainly rejuvenated me as a filmmaker.
You turned a year older on Feb 24.
I got the best possible gift for my birthday when "Black" won all the major Filmfare awards in both the 'critics' and 'popular' categories. What more could I hope for? Such recognition rejuvenates a filmmaker.
Rekha In Bhansali´s ´Saanwariya´ ?
By: Abid
The cast of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's next project after 'Black' , 'Saanwariya' , is getting more and more interesting . Initially , it was supposed to be launch vehicle of Anil Kapoor's pretty daughter Sonam and Rishi-Neetu's handsome son Ranbir . But later on they were joined by Salman and Rani . It does not stop at that . According to unit sources , ageless beauty Rekha ( last seen in 'Parineeta') will essay an important role in the film . While Bhansali is non-committal , our little bird tells us that , " Rekha ji is all set play one of her best roles ever ."
Will Rekha be able to equal her favourite co-star (of the 80s) Amitabh's brilliant histrionics of 'Black' ? We have to wait and watch for that !
We repeat , Bhansali has not given any signals (yet!) about the inclusion of Rekha in 'Saanwariya' . But here is hoping he does so and soon!

Monty to compose music for Bhansali's Sawariya
IndiaGlitz [Wednesday, March 01, 2006]
He was Ismail Darbar's assistant on the keyboard. He is today his replacement. Monty, nephew of music director Pyarelal has replaced Ismail Darbar in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film Sawariya. The background score in Devdas and Black that took truck loads of filmfare awards home last weekend was done by Monty.
The genius that he is, he has been awarded an opportunity to present his talent as a music director full throttle. Any way Sanjay is in the mood to experiment and do something new and different. It seems Monty and Sanjay are working on the music of the film to come out with something very new and sparkling for the ears.
Sawariya marks the debut of Ranbir Kapoor (son of Rishi Kapoor) and Sonam Kapoor (daughter of Anil Kapoor). The film also stars Rani Mukherjee and Salman Khan. The news abuzz in the industry is that the film may also have an A- category Hollywood star. Well as of now we can only keep guessing who it will be.

Rani has been signed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali for his next film, Sanwariya, with Salman Khan. "While he was making Black, I was like clay for him to mould. In fact, anyone who wins an award for Black, should hand over the credit to Sanjay. I play an important role in Sanwariya and I am looking forward to working with him again," she says. Sanjay and Rani share a very good rapport. "Sanjay loves cholar dal, begun bhaja, chingri maccher malai curry and luchi. (Chhole, fried brinjal, prawn malai curry and puris). Every time he visits me, he relishes these delicacies. In return, Sanjay's mother makes dhokla for me," she says. Besides, once Rani returns from London she will join the unit of Babul. "I have seen Ravi Chopra's Baghbaan and I loved the film. I think Amitji and Hemaji look stunning in this film too. I will be working with John for the first time and I am sure it will be fun," she says.
