 Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya

Send Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya EcardsThis orthopedist loves female company. And he makes no bones about it.

Off-screen image be damned. Salman Khan rocks and rolls in his new David Dhawan comedy. As an orthopedist caught in a series of amorous crises Salman reveals a ferocious flair for the funnies. He is no stranger to playing the bewildered and frazzled rake. In the irrepressible David Dhawan's BIWI NO. 1 Salman was trapped between the luscious Sushmita Sen and Karisma Kapoor.

Here it's the still-luscious Sen and the new Lolita in town Katrina Kaif. The threesome makes terrific eye-candy for the soul.

Not that Dhawan ever aims for any other part of you except the funny bone. Throughout, he sustains a feverish comic pitch, thanks to the almost-flawless comic timing of the actors and Sanjay Chel's witty wham-liners which are blessedly free of vulgarity except when Rajpal Yadav walks in (if 'walks in' is appropriate considering he plays a crippled soldier) with his raunchy references to legs that cannot stand and all (yipes!).

Send Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya EcardsThe minor aberrations apart, Dhawan's remake of Gene Saks' 1960s comedy CACTUS FLOWER leaves you with a big smile. It's sassy and savvy, quick on the uptake and always trotting on the fast track. Sure, a bland patch occurs in after intermission when the rollicking ramble slackens a bit. But then again, Dhawan catches his breath for a final sprint across a climactic canvas that leaves the audiences gasping for breath.

Portions of the film are appropriated from various sources including of course CACTUS FLOWER. The sequence in the aircraft at the end where Arbaaz Khan (making a fleeting brotherly appearance) persuades all the passengers to disembark is ripped off from an episode of the American television serial Friends.

And then there's Sohail Khan. the surprise packet in this slick-and-span comedy of mix 'n' matched couples. His prankish puckish parodic presence replicates Akshay Kumar's drop-'dread' antics in Dhawan's previous comic outing MUJHSE SHAADI KAROGI.

Send Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya EcardsThe quality of laughter is seldom diluted. Portions of the film are almost theatrical in their thundering display of exaggerated emotions. The opening sequence where the fey Sonia (Katrina Kaif) switches on the gas burner after a lovers tiff with her supposedly married lover Samir (Salman) and is rescued by her new bratty neighbour - Pyare (Sohail), could be straight out of a off-Broadway play. or an episode of Friends.

In some loopy but likeable way, David Dhawan pays a backhanded tribute to Abe Burrows' smash hit play on which Cactus Flower was based, and also to the spirit of the American sitcom where the characters' urban quirks are transmuted into emblems of cinematic celerity.

Send Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya EcardsSanjay Gadhvi and Nikhil Advani tried to capture the same spirit in MERE YAAR KI SHAADI HAI and KAL HO NA HO.

Dhawan does it with a panache that parodies the American parodies on television. Cool and kookie, smooth and sassy and yet as desi as the ghee in which grandma makes her paratha, MAINE PYAAR KYUN KIYA is actually a very smart satire on characters who insist on behaving dumbly due to circumstances.

Who would believe that the cerebrally sensuous Sushmita would actually get into the role of a nurse who gets into her boss' wife's role to appease the man's girlfriend and then his steamroller of a mother (Bina Kak) who, incidentally rolls in the laughs just when the narrative shows signs of sagging.

Once again, Sushmita Sen steals the thunder and lightening. Watch her swift-and-svelte moves in the rain song 'Lagaa Lagaa Re' (composer Himesh Reshammiya, getting the film's mood into his melodies bang-on). Then watch her do the frazzled nurse who turns into the coy wife and then the harridan pretending to be like the evil filmy 'bahu' with a relish that makes the parody appear enormously frothy and delicious.

Sen goes through the gamut and comes up with a performance that very few mainstream commercial actors can equal. Katrina Kaif, pretty as a picture and fortunately not deadpan, is like a kid learning the ropes of play-acting from Sen. She suits the role.

Salman is no stranger to the philandering guy's role. Here he shows unexpectedly inventive qualities (for example the way he uses his eyes to convey deception, confusion and childlike anguish) and comes up with his best performance in recent times.

But it's his brother Sohail who surprises you. Bristling with a neurotic brattiness he comes up with the kind of performance that has no reference-points in Hindi films.

You wish there was more of the super-gifted Arshad Warsi who as Sushmita's not-so-secret admirer leers and sighs at the lady with a gourmet's relish. Surprisingly the songs dances and other emblems of courtship don't get in the way of the narrative. The art direction and cinematography capture the film's bright bubbly spirit without tripping over in giddy excitement.

The over-the-top mood, the exaggerated bonhomie and the broad bravura of characters caught in a cute and corny 5-sided romantic musical chairs involving 5 characters who breathe fire and vice, is infectious.

Send Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya EcardsYou may think of MPKK as a no-brainer with laughs borrowed from extraneous sources. But that's a mistake. A lot of brains go into making intelligent actors look spaced-out on the screen.

Welcome to the world of whacked-out wizardry.

It is difficult to say who is whose muse in the case of David Dhawan and Salman Khan. They complement each other like Dhawan used to once with Govinda, and make merry on screen in ways that might amuse or irritate but never bore.

And so, close on the heels of Mujhse Shaadi Karogi comes another comic caper Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya, directed by David Dhawan with Sohail Khan, Arshad Warsi, Sushmita Sen and Katrina Kaif keeping Salman Khan company. The lot together kick up a storm, which is constantly amusing in the first half and falls periodically flat in the second but by and large, keeps the laughs coming.

Borrowed liberally from Cactus Flower, it is abut this orthopedic doctor Salman Khan, with a roving eye who keeps matrimony at bay by pretending to be married. When he finally falls for Katrina Kaif to whom he has already spun the marriage story, he needs to show a divorce and enlists the aid of his pretty but reserved nurse Sushmita Sen. The lie gets compounded many times, not helped in any way by the fact that Katrina’s friendly neighbour Sohail Khan is a bit too friendly. Salman’s best friend Arshad Warsi constantly flirts with Sushmita even though he has a girlfriend Isha Koppikar. When Salman’s mother appears on the scene the comedy descends into farce but with an emotional ending resurfaces.

The story of a man who lies all the time is inherently funny because one lie always leads to another providing funny moments when they are discovered and unraveled.

What helps keep the story moving are the songs which are not very tuneful but are young and energetic and make for some terrific dance movements on the part of all the actors but especially Salman Khan. His chemistry with Sohail in their sequences is excellent. David Dhawan is back in form and proves Mujhse Shaadi Karogi was not a fluke. Rumi Jaffery’s writing is a big help.

Salman Khan does not talk down to the audience as he did in some films in the past but seems to be having a merry time and that transfers to the audience. Sohail Khan displays a hitherto unrevealed flair for comedy and matches Salman well. Katrina Kaif has made good strides as an actress in very little time and will surely be an actress to watch out for. She is also very pleasant looking. Sushmita oozes sensuality and is unbeatable in song sequences. Even when fully covered in her nurse’s uniform she is sexy. Arshad Warsi is terrific as the sidekick. Isha Koppikar is ok. Beena Kak who is the mother, plays to the gallery but gets the audience asking for more. Rajpal Yadav is occasionally funny but otherwise irritating.

Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya is good fun and definitely worth a watch.

RADIOSARGAM REVIEW...

FILM REVIEW: MAINE PYAR KYUN KIYA (2005)

David Dhawan the ultimate comedy KING is back with Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya and he has brought the same comic concept as in ‘Mujhse Shaadi Karogi’ that recently completed its golden jubilee. He is very particular about the selection of the storyline; its treatment, dialogue, music and attention paid to details.

Under the banner of Shree Asthavinayak Cine Vision, Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya is a Sohail Khan Production. Love triangles with an ample dose of comedy have always worked wonders at the box office and David Dhawan is a master in that. The story revolves around two women falling in love with one man, but it borrows heavily from a hit Broadway play, which director Gene Saks adapted brilliantly on the big screen and called it CACTUS FLOWER (1969; starring Walter Matthau, Goldie Hawn, Ingrid Bergman).

Putting crazy but real characters into absurd yet believable situations are David Dhawan’s idea of the film. When you give him a story about a lying doctor, a passionate nurse and a suicidal girlfriend, aided by many other funny characters, he produces a vintage that will keep you laughing like a mad……That’s Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya.

Samir – In Maine Pyar Kyon Kiya Salman Khan is playing a Casanova who falls for every other chick he meets. An orthopedic by profession he mends broken bones, but there’s no cure for the hearts he breaks. The handsome doc has two weaknesses – he cannot resist women and he can’t stick with a woman for long.

Always, charming ladies who visit Samir as patient, end up passionately in his love. Before the lady get serious enough, Samir has an excuse ready that always works “I am already married”. As soon as he utters those words the woman leaves him and he is free to look for another.

But for the first time Samir heart is set on Sonia, and that one lie makes his life hell.

Sonia - Katrina Kaif is a London based model who is gorgeous and slightly spoilt young lady. If she wants something, she grabs it without asking. If she doesn’t get her own way, she resorts to dramatic tactics, such as threatening suicide! She comes to India for her treatment. Samir gets attracted to her and she becomes his latest obsession.

Samir starts romancing with Sonia; with the same intention of not getting married with her and in the process tells her that he is married. But she still loves him and asks Samir to take divorce. After sometime, Samir feels that he is really in love with Sonia and wish to marry her, but this is where the problem arises. Sonia has one condition before marring Samir, she wants to meet his wife!

Now Samir has to find a fake wife. But then to solve such matters is Samir ’s efficient nurse/receptionist for 5 years Naina

Naina - Samir’s secretary, a beautiful, work-obsessed, dutiful nurse is played by Sushmita Sen who is always busy making sure that the doctor keeps his appointments with his many patients and his as many girlfriends. She also has soft corner for Samir for which he is unaware and thinks of her as his lifesaver. Naina is Samir’s most loyal and dutiful friend with a heart of Gold. She is always there to help him, in life.

She even agrees to play Samir’s wife in front of Sonia!

Naina agrees to act as his wife, until Sonia and Samir don’t get married. Samir asks her to act as an unfaithful wife, a fraud, so that it may convince Sonia, of the Samir’s reasons for getting divorced to Naina. Because Sonia spots Naina with her niece and nephew and believes that they are Samir ’s kids, now she wants to meet them also to give them all the love of ‘doosri maa’ [second mom].Guilt feeling engulfs Naina but she continues to lie and act for Samir ’s sake because he has promised that this drama to end after a fake.

But this is where the next problem arises. Samir’s mom arrives in the nick of time to prevent the divorce.

Samir’s mother - Bina Kak, who has a strange habit of slapping before speaking accepts Naina as her daughter-in-law and doesn’t want Samir to divorce Naina.

Samir and Naina are now forced to live together while Sonia watches. In the meanwhile there is Pyaare

Sohail Khan - Sohail is nosey Pyaare Mohan, Sonia’s neighbour. He is a thorn in Samir’s eyes and a bolder in his love path. He equally wants Sonia, and wants to shatter the image of Samir in the eyes of Sonia. Pyaare knows that Samir is unmarried and he is also a playboy. Samir doesn’t want Pyaare to tell this secret of his to Sonia but Pyaare always threatens him and interferes when Samir is romancing with Sonia.

Arshad Warsi is Vicky is Samir’s best friend who likes to imagine himself as a dashing Casanova too but not as much luck. Inspite of a steady girlfriend [Isha Kopikar] he never lets a single moment go in Samir ’s clinic without flirting with Naina who keeps brushing him off.

And if all this wasn’t enough, there is ‘Thapa’ [Rajpal Yadav] who wants himself treated at Samir ’s clinic and has his own lies to protect.

Samir is stuck. He loves Sonia. Sonia loves him but wants permission from his all family members before getting married. Samir mother does not want divorce between Samir and Naina. Naina loves Samir. Pyaare loves Sonia and hates Samir. Vicky flirts with Naina. And if all this was not enough, ‘Thapa’ too has fallen in love with Naina!!

With so much confusion and tension Samir keep asking “Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya”

The sequences involving Salman, Katrina and Sohail are among the most enjoyable. The two guys are always pulling each other’s leg to show the other one down in front of the girl. In other parts, Salman, Sush and Arshad bring the house down with their impeccable comedy.

Foot tapping music by Himesh Reshammiya which is young and already in the charts - “Just Chill” is the track that is rocking. While Sameer too deserves equal praise, the threesome Sonu Nigam, Jayesh Gandhi and debutant Amrita Kak have done an exemplary job to make this track an instantly likable creation. The choreography of ‘Just Chill’ and ‘Laga Prem Rog’ in particular is very energetic. The film bears a striking look throughout, courtesy Vikas Shivraman’s cinematography.

Some of the post-interval portions are very lengthy and the promise evident in the first half gets diluted in the next one hour. Also, the pace slackens in the post-interval portions. The writing in the second half could’ve been better.

Isha Koppikar and Rajpal Yadav are wasted and have nothing much to do. Arbaaz Khan, is there in a very-very small guest appearance and so he fails to register any kind of impact. Salman gives a decent performance and at places he overacts. Katrina Kaif’s dubbed voice doesn’t suit her at all. Arshad warsi and Rajpal Yadav’s cameos are watchable. Bina kak is irritating as mother.

Overall, the movie is a complete masala fare. If ‘Mujhsay Shaadi Karoogi’ is your idea of fun, ‘Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya’ is worth a dekho.

Entertainment Unlimited

Film critic, ApunKaChoice.Com

Kitsch and wit are balanced evenly in David Dhawan’s comic caper Maine Pyar Kyon Kiya. With a story that is marked with hilarious situations and amazing performances from the likes of Salman Khan, Sohail Khan, Arshad Warsi and Sushmita Sen, Maine Pyar Kyon Kiya promises entertainment unlimited. Add to this Katrina Kaif’s breezing charm and David Dhawan’s trademark style of spicing slapstick comedy with funny love story.

A lovesick doctor mends broken bones and invents lies to cover up his lack of commitment in relationships with his female patients. And then he invents new lies to cover up the old ones. Samir (Salman), the “haddiyon ka doctor” can’t resist women, but can’t commit to them either. Every one of his infatuations is supported by a well-crafted lie that he is married.

But then, lightening crashes and enters Sonia (Katrina), a sexy model with suicidal tendencies. Quite a combination! This peculiar, cute-looking woman does to Samir what others failed to do. Samir falls in love. But Sonia’s love is not without its conditions.

She wants to meet Samir’s wife. So Samir presents his receptionist-cum-nurse Naina (Sushmita) as his make-believe wife. But then Sonia wants to see Naina’s supposed boyfriend. To play the beau of his make-believe wife, Samir brings in his friend Vickey (Arshad).

But there is no end to Sonia’s inquisitiveness. She wants to meet Samir’s “children”, his “mother” and his friends. Samir keeps on heaping lie upon lie.

And then there is Pyaare (Sohail Khan), jo sabki maare. He is Sonia’s slapstick, Mr. Bombastic neighbor who is no less smitten with her. He grabs by beard any and every chance or excuse to be close to her. And he is hell bent on pulling Samir’s leg in front of her. An equal contender for Sonia’s hand, Pyaare is a potential threat to Samir. He can blow his cover.

The cobweb of Samir’s lies grows thicker with Sonia’s growing inquisition. Things get chaotic and confusing to such an extent that Samir holds his head and clamors – “Maine Pyar KYUN!!! Kiya”.

The best thing about Dhawan’s comedy is that it doesn’t make you regret the absence of logic in story. On the contrary, you enjoy the lack of rationale and the hilarious kitsch that you just can’t help laughing at. Maine Pyar Kyon Kiya is replete with such moments.

The sequences involving Salman, Katrina and Sohail are among the most enjoyable. The two guys are always pulling each other’s leg to show the other one down in front of the girl. In other parts, Salman, Sush and Arshad bring the house down with their impeccable comedy.

Salman and Sohail are the main pillars of this movie. While Salman’s comic flair is a common knowledge, it is Sohail – mostly seen in brooding, brawny roles – who springs a surprise by showing for the first time his aptitude to tickle the funny bone.

Arshad Warsi lives upto his reputation of an ace comedian. Sushmita Sen is impressive. Bina Kak (as Salman’s mother who slaps first and talks later) is a revelation. Katrina Kaif shows remarkable improvement. She is no longer just the cute-bland face with few expressions. Although she is the main catalyst for comedy in this film and doesn’t do comedy herself, she breezes through her role with commendable ease.

In short, Maine Pyar Kyon Kiya has all the ingredients that make a funny entertainer. It has a hilarious story replete with ample doses of sidesplitting humor. It has funky music that gels well with the movie’s theme. And it has a sweet surprise in the climax – a cameo by the third Khan brother, Arbaaz.

Worth a watch.

Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya Reviews

David Dhawan does it again. After loosing his way in the late 90s and early years of this side of the millennium, he first reinvented himself with 'Mujhse Shaadi Karogi' in 2004 that recently completed its golden jubilee. And what better way to celebrate the success of his Salman Khan-Akshay Kumar-Priyanka Chopra starrer than to come up with yet another explosive comedy 'Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya' - a Sohail Khan, Seema Kar, Dhilin Mehta production under the banner of Shree Asthavinayak Cine Vision.

Sameer [Salman Khan] is an orthopedic doctor who is in a helpless situation as his charm never fails on his patient, especially when the patient happens to be a young woman. To avoid getting into the trap, he lies to every woman that he is married. Instead he loves an established model cum dress designer Sonia [Katrina Kaif] who threatens suicide every time she seems something amiss in Sameer's love for her.

Life is going smooth for the couple till the time Sonia demands Sameer that she wants to meet his wife before they get married. A difficult task? Indeed yes! But then to solve such matters is Sameer's efficient nurse/receptionist for 5 years Naina [Sushmita Sen] who manages everything for him, be it the appointments, the medical reports, the patients and even his lunch orders! The reason is simple - she silently loves him!

She steps in as Sameer's wife after an initial reluctance just in order to convince Sonia that her marriage was on rocks and she was happy to let her marry Sameer. Everyone thinks that its going to be 'living happily ever after' for Sameer from here but that isn't the case. Because Sonia spots Naina with her niece and nephew and believes that they are Sameer's kids. And now she wants to meet them also to give them all the love of 'doosri maa' [second mom].

Guilt feel engulfs Naina but she continues to lie and act for Sameer's sake because he has promised that this drama to end after a fake. But here comes another twist in the tale. Sameer's 'maa' [Beena Kak] from Punjab, who slaps before she speaks, arrives in the nick of time to prevent the divorce.

Sameer and Naina are now forced to live together while Sonia watches. In the meanwhile there is Pyaare [Sohail Khan], Sonia's next door 'struggling hero' neighbor who has the knack of being at the right time in the right place and never fails to openly profess his affection for her. Vicki [Arshad Warsi] is another film actor who is Sameer's best friend and inspite of a steady girlfriend [Isha Kopikar] never lets a single moment go in Sameer's clinic without flirting with Naina. And if all this wasn't enough, there is a Kargil war hero 'Thapa' [Rajpal Yadav] who wants himself treated at Sameer's clinic.

Sameer is stuck. He loves Sonia. Sonia loves him but first wants permission from his all family members before getting married. Pyaare loves Sonia and hates Sameer. Naina loves Sameer. Vicky flirts with Naina. And if all this was not enough, 'Thapa' too has fallen in love with Naina!!

What happens next? Do Sameer, his mom, Naina and the kids continue to stay together as one happy family? Does Sonia get Sameer? And what happens to Naina after all her sacrifice?

A plot like this could have turned out to be highly confusing or an utter drag. But to the credit of Rumi Jaffrey's tout screenplay, Sanjey Chhel's dialogues and Salim-Suleman's background score - three pillars on which MPKK rests - David Dhawan delivers goods by coming up with a non-stop laugh riot that turns out to be a neat family entertainer. Movie bears a rich'n'glossy looks throughout, courtesy Vikas Shivraman's cinematography.

There are numerous rib tickling moments in the movie, notably being:

- Katrina's first meet with Salman's kids in a video game parlor
- Beena Kak's introduction and her subsequent travel from railway station to the court
- Court room sequence just before the interval point
- Sushmita's 'bad bahu' act
- Entire climax sequence

One is amazed to see that this is the same director, who in the 90s was accused of relying on double entendres to make his movies run. But the way Dhawan comes up with a polished and refreshed approach while keeping his direction style alive is worth applause. He keeps in mind the sensibilities of today's audience and comes up with a glossy product that would work across all age groups and class.

First half of the movie is extremely breezy and before you realize what's happening in the lives of all the characters, interval arrives as the high point of the movie. Post interval too, the movie continues at a good pace, albeit with a few ups and downs. But due to efficient direction by Dhawan, he manages to keep a stranglehold on the subject, with last 15-20 minutes elevating the movie's proceedings to a high.

Himesh Reshammiya's music flows well with the narrative of the movie. Fast paced, energetic and foot tapping, each of the tracks have been choreographed well and carry a vibrant look. Pick of the lot are 'Laaga Pem Rog', 'Just Chill' and 'Ye Ladki'.

MPKK is undoubtedly a Sushmita Sen film. She towers above one and all with the portrayal of a love struck yet sensible, emotional and caring woman who knows where to draw lines. Inspite of Salman Khan's presence, she is not absent for more than 5 minutes on the screen. Salman Khan cmes up with a breezy performance yet again without getting carried away even once. His comic timing is just perfect!

Katrina Kaif does exceedingly well in comparison to her 'Boom' and delivers what all a mainstream Hindi movie actress is required to do. She looks gorgeous [simply picture perfect], never appears vulgar inspite of her short outfits throughout the movie's length, dances good and to top it all acts reasonably well in scenes ranging from comic to serious to emotional. Her dialogue delivery is convincing too.

Both Sohail Khan and Arshad Warsi steal the scene whenever they are on frame. While Sohail never fails to act cocky in his continuous bickering with Salman, Arshad's flirtatious attitude and one liners always get the house down. Rajpal Yadav is routine in his 3 scenes and delivers again. Isha Kopikar appears in just 2 fleeting shots and a celebration song for her friendly appearance.

Beena Kak, making her debut as an over the top Punjabi mom is a revelation and delivers an astounding performance. Rest assured, she would be the favorite to play the most loved 'saas' from hereon.

Love triangles with an ample dose of comedy have always worked wonders at the box office. Now get your seat belts fastened for yet another rip roaring drive from Dhawan that has a perfect mix of ingredients [comedy and a few emotions] hence ensuring an enjoyable family outing. A spicy 'bhelpuri' of love, confusion, funny rivalry and mistaken identities, MPKK is a young at heart flick that entertains throughout.

Go watch it with your entire family. You won't be disappointed!

SALMAN SCORES A HIT EVEN AMIDST CONTROVERSY

It has never happened before in the history of Indian cinema . This Friday when Salman Khan's latest film 'Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya' reached at the box office, the whole nation is talking about him courtesy the tapes containing his conversation with his lost love Aishwarya Rai. Though authenticity of these tapes is yet to be established, the country is already hooked to the news that Salman Khan used his underworld links to try Aishwarya dance at underworld don Abu Salem's show.

The controversy seems to be helping Salman's new film 'Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya' at the box office that has opened to full houses. However, it's screening in some parts of the country remained disrupted following protests by the saffron brigade. The police advised the theaters in Mumbai not to exhibit the movie at all. However, the prospects of the film look very bright at the box office.

This is Salman's second film during this year after moderate success of 'Lucky-No Time For Love'. With 'Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya', Salman also teams up with his favorite director David Dhawan with whom he delivered a hit in 'Mujhse Shaadi Karogi' last year. The David-Salman combo has been a success most of the time since 'Judwa' except for few films like 'Chal Mere Bhai'. 'Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya' also happens to be first film where you get to see Salman with his both brothers-- Sohail and Arbaaz. Salman has worked in 'Auzar' and 'Hello Brother' with Arbaaz, while Sohail has directed big brother in the latter.

'Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya' is a fun-filled film where the logic has no place. The story revolves around Dr. Samir who is an orthopedic surgeon by profession; he helps people with broken bones but has a broken heart for himself. Actually, Samir is a flirt. He befriends beautiful girls and then breaks relations with them on the plea that he is a married man. This goes on and on. Samir gets all the support from his dedicated and workaholic nurse Naina (Sushmita Sen). Naina not only takes care of his patients but she tries to keep a check on his affairs.

All seems to be going well until Sonia (Kathrina Kaif) enters Samir's life. Samir once again plays the same trick with Sonia. But this time round matters get serious, as Sonia is ready to marry him even if he is already married. However, she insists on meeting his wife first. This tricky situation makes Samir work overtime to save his skin. Once again Naina comes to his help and in the form of a friend Vicky (Arshad Warsi) and fake patient Thapa (Raj Pal Yadav). But this puts Samir's mother (Bina Kak) and also Pyaare Lal (Sohail Khan) who is hell bent on disclosing all the lies that Samir has been telling to Sonia, in trouble.

'Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya' is a victory for David Dhawan. He has gained back his lost charm at box office once again; first with 'Mujhse Shadi Karogi' and now in 'Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya'. His love for comedy has paid off and his labor to assemble the right cast has helped him a lot to make 'Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya' sail at the box office smoothly.

After long Rumi Jaffery has been able to write right lines for the right situations, maybe his failure has taught him a lesson. He creates a situational comedy with apt jokes spread over here and there. Besides, David Dhawan has made the right combination of lyricist Sameer and music director Himesh Reshamiya.

Sameer has come up with some very good and soothing lines, equally turned into melodious tunes by Himesh. The pair has been a hit since 'Tere Naam' and songs of 'Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya' show that they can come out with more hits in near future. Two songs of the film 'Just Chill Just Chill' and 'Goriya Dil Se Mila Le Dil' are huge hits.

'Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya' is Salman Khan's film without any doubt. He plays Samir's role to the T. If in 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam', Salman played Samir as an emotional guy, in 'Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya' he shows the other side of a lover boy.

Kid brother Sohail Khan equally matches his timing for comedy. In fact, as a comedy actor Sohail is a revelation.

Sohail has done romantic and action films so far, but 'Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya' proves that he can go miles as an actor if he gets good director. Then comes Sushmita Sen who once again plays a pretty doll after 'Main Hoon Na'. She brings a kind of grace and maturity to the story, and with her charm the frames of the film look wonderful. Kathrina Kaif too has shown immense improvement.

She carries on from where she left in 'Sarkar' with Junior B. Two other actors catch the attention of the viewers in the film and they are Arshad and Bina Kak. Arshad has got a right mentor in David Dhawan. David has another protégé in making in Arshad. On the whole, 'Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya' is film of the season, and given the hype that recent tape controversy has created for the film, it will sure be a winner at box office.

The story

Of late, David Dhawan has been focusing on love triangles. He started the trend last year with Mujhse Shaadi Karogi and followed it up with Maine Pyaar Kyon Kiya . Like ‘MSK’, this one also revolves around one man (Salman Khan) romancing two girls (Sushmita Sen and Katrina Kaif). Samir [Salman Khan] is a doctor who mends broken bones.

He has one weakness, he can’t resist women. And to help keep the women at bay, he pretends that he’s married. Enter Sonia (Katrina Kaif), a bright and beautiful model. She falls in love with the dashing doctor, but there’s one condition: Samir has to introduce her to his wife (who doesn’t exist).

He initially tries telling one lie after another, but at the end he’s stuck. He ropes in his reluctant beautiful nurse cum attendant Naina (Sushmita Sen) to play his wife. After that the movie goes on a rollercoaster ride.

Direction:

Comedy might be a serious business for others, but for David Dhawan it’s always been a fun and frolic affair and he proves it in his latest laugh riot. Over the years, the rolly polly director has mastered the art of tickling the audiences’ funny bone like no other director. The end result is he lets them forget their misery and agony and puts a smile on their face. David has done it umpteen times and this time too succeeds in his attempt, giving us a thoroughly entertaining film.

The music:

Himesh Reshammiya has come up with some peppy numbers like 'Just Chill', and 'Laga Prem Rog'

The actors

The film belongs to Salman Khan and Sushmita all the way. Their able screen presence lights up the screen. Salman looks dashing (as ever), while Sushmita proves again that she’s a real stunner, both in terms of acting and looks.

Often the underdog, the hugely talented Arshad Warsi pulls in enough laughs with his one liners and fine comic timing. Arshad and Sushmita make the movie more watchable and enduring. But the same cannot be said about Sohail and Katrina Kaif; they don’t look inspired enough throughout the movie.

Our analysis:

Statuary warning: Coming with your brains to watch this movie might be injurious to your health. So please leave your brains at home. Just sit and relax and enjoy this mindless game of entertainment. And though the film has plenty of loose ends, it succeeds in its motive - that of entertaining both the masses and the classes. And the good news is that David has decided against using his usually trademark slapstick comedy in his latest flick.

Do you know why popcorn is legendary food? Because it's crunchy, corny, light and makes for a quick, fun, fuss-free snack. You don't have to bother about fork or spoon. You don't need to think about dips or dressings. Just toss them into your mouth -- chomp a little, smile a little.

I can't help but draw a similar parallel in David Dhawan movies. They are frothy, plain silly, comfortably illogical and unquestionably hilarious. I adore his indifference to reason. I love the way he thumbs down the existence of the brain. For him, it's as good as the appendix anyway
In his new movie Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya, Dhawan mirrors his thoughts through Salman Khan's character Sameer, who shrugs, 'Kyun, why, kaiko ka koi jawab nahi hota [All questions need not have an answer]'.

So back he is, with another mad caper, which thoroughly tends to the laugh muscles.

Characteristically, a Dhawan movie involves that either the hero cooks lies or is in disguise or he cons. In Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya, everyone gets to contribute -- hero lies, heroine pretends and side hero cons.

Here, our orthopaedic lover boy lies to save his bones from single wild females. He is to girls what a Kawasaki Vulcan 2000 is to guys. Dr Sameer Malhotra (Salman), however, prefers to boogie against the stunning backdrop of Maldives and Dubai in the gorgeous company of Sonia (Katrina Kaif).

Sonia is a model and practices suicide for kicks. When not being rescued by the haddiyon ka doctor (that's what he calls himself) or her over-friendly neighbour Pyaare (Sohail Khan), you might bump into her at dress designer Vikram Phadnis' store. And if it's your lucky day, she'll present you with a designer top, hanger included. Ask Naina (Sushmita Sen). She got lucky!

Who's Naina? Meet Naina aka Fantastic Four. She works as the doctor's nurse, receptionist, organiser and make-believe wife.

Sonia? Naina? Who does Sameer really fancy? Okay, you can scratch your head all you want. But frankly, that's something you cannot truly figure out till the end of the film. Basically, he suffers from the Jerry Maguire syndrome -- commitment. Every time a girl bats her eyelids, he pleads 'taken'.

Sonia, albeit, is a genuine contender. This time the doctor paints the town red, singing 'You're the one for me'. But the 'one' is hyper inquisitive. First, she wants to meet the non-existent wife. Enter Naina.

Then she wants to meet Naina's non-existent beau. Enter Vickey (Arshad Warsi). Then she wants to meet Sameer and Naina's non-existent children. Enter two oversmart kids.

Then she wants to meet the mother. Enter an upgraded and explosive version of Mother India – a deadly mix of Lalilta Pawar meets Cruella De Vil (Beena Kak makes a refreshing and rollicking debut). She is the kind of mother who inspires Danny DeVito to make a film like Throw Momma from the Train.

There are enough lies, goof-ups, slapstick, chaos, courtroom mockery, nightclub madness, rain seduction, saas-bahu soap drama and a Friends-final-episode-inspired-climax to keep the reel rolling. Right? Wrong! Dhawan doesn't stop at this. He adds a sidesplitting sub plot involving Rajpal Yadav as a handicapped army fella.

Dhawan loves to do a Tom and Jerry with his heroes. He did it successfully in Deewana Mastana and Mujhse Shaadi Karogi. He does it again with the brothers -- Salman and Sohail Khan -- in MPKK. The you-bully-me-I-bully-you situation over Katrina reaches uproarious peaks in the boat and swimming pool scenes.

Comedy is all about spontaneous humour. The actors, as a team, share a comfortable can-I-pull-your-leg chemistry. This ease shows in their performances. Salman's good-humoured disposition is charming. He, along with younger bro Sohail, is obviously having fun. Proof: The behind-the-scenes warm camaraderie is for all to see in the closing credits.

So far, so serious, Sohail does have a funny bone in his bulky body after all. Known for his tough guy image, the guy cracks you up with his antics as the wicked Pyaare. Reminiscent of Mujhse Shaadi Karogi's Sunny, Pyaare has a theme number too -- Naughty, Naughty Pyaare, Jo Sabki Maare.

Sushmita Sen as Naina looks hot, talks sense and acts super. Her intelligence doesn't interfere with the absurdity of her surroundings. It only makes it more convincing.

Katrina's Disney princess-like charm adds to her adorable screen presence. Cuteness is her prime contribution to MPKK.

You can always rely on Arshad Warsi to tickle you. He is aided in doing so by Rumi Jaffrey's crazy screenplay and Sanjay Chhel's nutty repartee.

Post-Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, David Dhawan's films wear a rather swell appearance. In terms of its body and colour, Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya is a sunshine romantic comedy. It has it all -- cool, summery colours, trendy hip-shaking music, rocking choreography, pretty looking actors and amusing banter.

The gods must be happy. The month of July is as promising as it gets. The last two Fridays saw Sarkar and Dus taking charge at the box office. Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya may well complete the hat-trick

Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya

With MUJHSE SHAADI KAROGI, David Dhawan decided to turn a new leaf. He decided to reinvent the formula that was the hallmark of his movies for almost two decades. MUJHSE SHAADI KAROGI looked more colorful, it had style and attitude, the actors were made to look ultra-glamorous, the packaging was just perfect…

The essence of David Dhawan films, however, continued to remain the same: Entertainment, minus double-entendres.

Riding high on the success of MUJHSE SHAADI KAROGI, DD now attempts yet another light entertainer that is targeted at the common man, with tremendous appeal not just for the youth but also for the family audiences. Like all DD films, MAINE PYAAR KYUN KIYA throws logic to the winds. So, when you saunter into a movieplex screening MAINE PYAAR KYUN KIYA, make sure you leave your thinking caps back at home.

Love triangles have always fascinated DD and MAINE PYAAR KYUN KIYA is no exception. This one also revolves around two women falling in love with one man, but it borrows heavily from a hit Broadway play, which director Gene Saks adapted brilliantly on the big screen and called it CACTUS FLOWER [1969; starring Walter Matthau, Goldie Hawn, Ingrid Bergman].

MAINE PYAAR KYUN KIYA is high on substance and more importantly, very high on entertainment. You expect to watch a breezy entertainer in those 2.15 hours, a film that doesn't test your intelligence and sure, the film lives up to the expectations.
Comedy is serious business. The moviegoer has to laugh at the right places and situations and DD has mastered the art over and over again. In a nutshell, MAINE PYAAR KYUN KIYA is a chill pill, a film that puts a smile on your face and yes, paisa vasool entertainment at its best!

There's no doctor like Samir [Salman Khan]. He mends broken bones, but there's no remedy for the hearts he breaks. That's because this orthopaedic surgeon just can't resist women. Neither can women stay away from this charming casanova.

But there's one exception: His work-obsessed, dutiful nurse Naina [Sushmita Sen].

She has no life except the doctor's clinic and she's always busy making sure that the doctor keeps his appointments with his many patients and his as many girlfriends.

To make sure none of his affairs become serious, Dr. Samir has one instant cure. He tells all his besotted girlfriends that he is already married. Most of them swallow this bitter dose and leave him alone.

But there's one exception: His latest love Sonia [Katrina Kaif]. She is beautiful, bright and sensitive. Samir is finally in love and tells her he wants to marry her. But she has one condition: She will marry him only after she has met his wife!

Now Samir is stuck. Because he has no wife!

To make his lie true, Samir has to tell one more lie. Then another. And yet another… Helping Samir cover the truth with his lies is the reluctant but loyal Naina. Helping Sonia discover the truth behind the lies is her besotted neighbor Pyaare [Sohail Khan].

Into this jamboree drops Samir's mom [Bina Kak], who slaps before speaking and Samir's best friend Vicky [Arshad Warsi] and his fake patient Thapa [Rajpal Yadav], who have their own lies to protect.

DD has always chosen actors who've a flair for comedy, their timing is bang-on and MAINE PYAAR KYUN KIYA gets it right in that department. The Salman-DD magic, starting with JUDWAA, right till MUJHSE SHAADI KAROGI, is on display in MAINE PYAAR KYUN KIYA as well. Sushmita, Sohail, Katrina, Arshad, Bina Kak… everyone lets their hair down and combine their energies for this joyride.

A love triangle is a much-used-and-abused genre in Bollywood, but DD and screenplay writer Rumi Jafry rise to the occasion to assure you laughter unlimited. A few sequences involving Salman, Katrina and Sohail as well as those involving Salman, Sush and Arshad are truly hilarious.

But that doesn't mean that the film is devoid of loose ends. The post-interval portions are very lengthy and the promise evident in the first half gets diluted in the next one hour. Also, the pace slackens in the post-interval portions. The editor could've used the scissors far more judiciously and trimming the film would've only helped. Even the writing in the second half could've been better!

David Dhawan keeps the interests of the masses in mind and that's pretty evident this time as well. For any light entertainer to strike a chord, it ought to be laced with gags and punches and most importantly, actors who can carry off the characters with élan. MAINE PYAAR KYUN KIYA has enough rib-tickling moments that can really drive you nuts and the pacing is so fast generally, it doesn't leave room for the moviegoer to blink an eyelid.

Himesh Reshammiya's music is in keeping with the mood of the film. 'Just Chill', 'Laga Prem Rog' and 'Dil Di Nazar' are peppy numbers that have been promoted extensively and also look good on screen. The choreography of 'Just Chill' and 'Laga Prem Rog' in particular is very energetic. The film bears a striking look throughout, courtesy Vikas Shivraman's cinematography. A film of this genre relies heavily on wit and humor and the repartees/witty retorts [dialogues: Sanjay Chhel] are superb.

MAINE PYAAR KYUN KIYA is a Salman Khan film all the way. The good looking actor has specialized at aimed-at-gallery roles and his performance plus charisma is what makes the goings-on so pleasurable. Besides, the terrific rapport that DD and Salman share translates beautifully on the big screen.

Sohail Khan is back and how! MAINE PYAAR KYUN KIYA showcases the youngest Khan's talent to the optimum and as the nosey Pyaare, he is truly pyaara. He tends to go over the top at places, but that's what the film demands! Sushmita Sen is so perfect, so natural and yes, eye-candy for those looking for the glamour quotient. Katrina Kaif is a complete revelation. The pretty lass, who showed improvement in SARKAR two weeks ago, finally gets the right role to showcase her talent.

Arshad Warsi is a major force to reckon with when it comes to comic roles and under DD's direction, the actor explodes big time. He is simply superb! Isha Koppikar gets no scope. Rajpal Yadav isn't in form this time. Bina Kak, as Salman's brash mother, is another actor to watch. She excels! Arbaaz Khan is there for just one scene in the penultimate reel.

On the whole, MAINE PYAAR KYUN KIYA is a breezy entertainer that will keep the viewers smiling, which in turn will make its distributors laugh all the way to the bank!
